Portsmouth Today: “Harbour protection plans are welcomed”

Plans to protect the future of Chichester Harbour have been supported by the group responsible for maintaining it.

The Chichester Harbour Conservancy has agreed to support the Coastal Defence Strategy for the East Head frontage.

The strategy, commissioned by Chichester District Council, the Environment Agency and Arun District Council, aims to protect the harbour from the threat of flooding.

The scheme will involve putting a large amount of recycled beach material into the vulnerable hinge and neck at the southern end of the harbour as well as the construction of a buried sill to ensure that if there is a catastrophic breakthrough into Snowhill Creek, a tidal channel does not develop.

John Davis, Chichester Harbour Master, said: ‘This proposed scheme has our full backing and we encourage local residents and harbour users to support the Coastal Defence Strategy for East Head.’
