LGC Plus: “East England councils fight sea”
Four councils are drawing up a new coastal erosion and flooding strategy across an 80-mile stretch of England’s coast in the face of a feared one-metre rise in sea levels over the next century.
Work is currently underway to prepare an updated shoreline management plan that will costs tens of millions for the coast between Flamborough Head in Yorkshire and Gibraltar Point in Lincolnshire, including the outer Humber Estuary.
The organisations involved in preparing the plan are East Riding of Yorkshire Council, North East Lincolnshire Council, East Lindsey DC, Lincolnshire CC along with organisations including the Environment Agency.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council head of community and sustainable development Paul Bellotti said at least 25 homes would be lost to the sea while defences were needed to prevent 1,000s of additional homes being hit.
“There is a relationship between the north and south bank of the Humber. East Lindsey needs the sand from the North bank.”
As part of the Plan’s development, exhibitions have been arranged along the coast to present the public with details about the work already completed.
The draft Plan will be published in August 2009. For further details on the Shoreline Management Plan click here
