Coastal Scene: “Thorpeness: Coastal defence project completed”

A £400,000 scheme to protect a vulnerable stretch of Suffolk coastline has finished ahead of schedule.

The second phase of the project at Thorpeness involved nearly 2,000 fabric bags filled with sand and shingle being used to strength the defences.

The defences at the northern end of the village are being reconstructed and strengthened after damage caused by storms in June last year. (more…)

Whitby Gazette: “New strategy to defence coastline”

THE PIER extensions may in future be protected by rock armour as part of a new strategy to safeguard the Whitby coast.

Stewart Rowe, Scarborough Borough Council’s principal coastal officer, gave a presentation at a full meeting of Whitby Town Council (6 Dec) about work that is taking place to create a new coastal defence strategy.

In this presentation he suggested that to completely repair all of Whitby’s sea defences, including the harbour, would cost around £80m. (more…)

EDP: “‘Rights at risk’ in Hopton sea plans”

Human rights will be breached if Great Yarmouth Borough Council fails to protect more than a dozen cliff-top homes and businesses from the ocean.

That is the view of Brian Hardisty whose Hopton home will be engulfed with 14 houses and two holiday companies if the Kelling to Lowestoft Ness Shoreline Management Plan (SMP) is approved.

His warning comes after plans revealed sea defences at Yarmouth and Gorleston would be maintained, while parts of Hopton would be allowed to fall into the sea. (more…)

Clacton Gazette: “Council pledges action on coastal erosion”

COUNCIL bosses say nothing is being ruled out as they try to prevent homes and businesses sliding into the sea.

Stretches of coastline in Clacton and Holland on Sea are under increasing threat from erosion.

More than 2,000 homes and businesses will slide into the sea over the coming decades if nothing is done. (more…)

Yorkshire Post: “Sea wall alert amid landslip fears for resort Spa”

ONE of Yorkshire’s most popular attractions could be at risk from devastating landslips unless action is taken to repair a sea wall, it has been claimed.

The Yorkshire Post reported yesterday that councillors in Scarborough will next week examine plans for a new 1.1 metre (3.6ft) sea wall around a stretch of the resort’s South Bay designed to protect the area from the ravages of the North Sea and the incre,asing risks of climate change.

However, the scheme will also play a key part in stabilising the cliff behind the famous Scarborough Spa complex which attracts tens of thousands of visitors each year. (more…)

Sussex Express: “Some of Sussex coastline to disappear in 20 years “

PARTS of the Sussex coastline will disappear within the next 20 years, according to a map produced by the Environment Agency.

The new online map, which is accessible to the public, shows how the coast, including Newhaven, Seaford and Peacehaven, will be affected.

It reveals how the coast is being managed and any defences in place. (more…)

Echo: “Sea defence crusader: Why I feel vindicated”

A CAMPAIGNING councillor who battled for more than ten years to get flood defences improved feels vindicated after work was finally approved.

The Environment Agency announced it will start strengthening the sea wall to protect people, property and agricultural land.

Three miles of tidal embankment will be targeted between Pig’s Bay, north of Shoebury, and Havengore Bridge, Great Wakering. (more…)

Yorkshire Post: “Academic aims to clear up erosion’s muddied waters”

AN academic is hoping to establish that understanding and predicting coastal erosion is as clear as mud.

Hull University Professor Daniel Parsons has been awarded a grant to begin a three-year study of mudlfats in the Dee and Humber estuaries.

Climate change could change the way sediments are moved around by water currents and Prof Parsons will assess how this change could impact on estuaries and coastlines. (more…)
