Guardian: “The rising tide of coastal erosion”

Jules Pretty decided that blistered feet would be worth enduring to observe at close quarters the social, as well as environmental, effects of coastal erosion. The professor of environment and society at Essex University walked 400 miles around the coastline of East Anglia and travelled another 100 miles by boat. “I started under the M25 at Thurrock in Essex and finished up at King’s Lyn in Norfolk,” he says over the noise from the espresso machine in an Italian café near the Royal Society, where he is heading for a meeting. The Journal: “Erosion at Tynemouth beach is not a ‘priority’”

tynemouthTHE Government has ruled out providing help to tackle the problem of shifting sands at Tynemouth.

North Tyneside Council’s cabinet will be told tomorrow of the toll which winter winds and high tides have taken on the Blue Flag Longsands beach and dunes.

The erosion has left a sheer face to part of the dunes system which has led to the closure of some public access points.

The council has approached the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in an effort to secure funding to improve coastal protection for the Longsands.

But Defra has said there is a limited budget available nationally to tackle coastal erosion, and the Environment Agency prioritises funding on a national basis to address the highest risk areas.

“The sand loss you have described at Tynemouth would not meet the priority criteria for funding,” Defra told the council. (more…)

EDP: “Picture reveals the destructive powers of the North Sea”

Depleted beaches at Corton taken on 16/03/2010 by Mike Page. It is an aerial picture that evokes the full force of the North Sea – its waves breaking against a vulnerable cliff-face.

And it is one that makes it all too clear why residents in Corton, to the south, and Hopton, to the north of this stretch of coastline between Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft, are increasingly anxious about the future.

Their concerns were voiced to the minister for marine and natural environment Huw Irranca-Davies when he visited the area on Monday and saw the depleted beach at Hopton and crumbling sea defences at the northern end of Corton. (more…)

Yarmouth Mercury: “Hopton beach erosion report anger”

A MEETING aimed at shedding light on the coastal erosion debate at Hopton has fanned the flames of the controversy and lead to accusations of a whitewash.

Senior officials were at the village hall on Monday to reveal the findings of a controversial report looking at how the outer harbour had affected the rate of beach depletion.

Campaigners – who say the port is fuelling erosion – were told their views were not backed up by a beach monitoring survey, triggering sighs of disbelief among some of those listening. (more…)

NW Evening Mail: “Walney erosion claims dismissed as ‘rubbish’”

WALNEY stalwarts have dismissed claims the island has lost 100 metres of its coastline in 30 years as “rubbish”.

John Murphy has dedicated his life to studying local nature and history.

While he does not deny that parts of Walney, Piel Island and other areas along the shoreline are suffering from erosion, he refuses to believe Walney has lost 100 metres of its coastline in the last 30 years. (more…)

Whitehaven News: “Cumbria’s Eskmeals firing range at risk as erosion hits road”

The Eskmeals firing rangeThe future of Cumbria’s Eskmeals firing range is in doubt because the only access road is in danger of being washed away.

The Ministry of Defence gun range, operated by QinetiQ, employs 82 people.

But the only access, from the A595 at Bootle in west Cumbria, is at risk from coastal erosion. (more…)

European Commission, DG Environment: “Managing the twin risks of flooding and erosion in coastal areas”

Coastal areas are naturally at risk from erosion and flooding, but this risk is increased by the effects of climate change. A recent study has examined choices for regulators and coastline managers and suggests that successful management in high risk areas needs a fully integrated approach involving all stakeholders. edie: “Crumbling coastline threatens landfill spills”

Coastal rubbish tips that long since covered over and abandoned could cause a fresh headache as erosion threatens to open them up and wash the waste into the sea.

Predicted impacts of climate change resulting in changing weather patterns and sea level rise put an ever-increasing pressure on the UK coastline to support flood and erosion management.

This possible increased level of coastal erosion places risk of wash-out of potential hazardous waste from former industrial and domestic landfill sites situated along the coastline in the UK. (more…)

Yorkshire Post: “The sea takes what the Nazis couldn’t, as creeping coastal erosion eats away the east coast”

Ringborough BatteryFOR years it has stood as an evocative reminder of the days when Yorkshire’s East Coast faced up to German aggression. But now the East Coast landmark looks set to fall victim to a far more insidious opponent – coastal erosion. [watch video]

The artillery battery that sits on the clifftops near Aldbrough was more than 300ft from the edge when it was built in 1943 to stop shells being fired from enemy ships at Hull.

But by 2000, as the images show, the heavily reinforced gun  emplacements had collapsed into the sea, leaving the tunnels used to carry the shells hanging over the edge. (more…)
