Falmouth Packet: “Views on the coastline sought from Falmouth residents”

People living near the coast in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, are being asked for their views on proposals for how the coastline should be planned over the next 100 years.

A review of the original Shoreline Management Plans, which were completed in 1999, is being undertaken and this is a chance for the public to get further involved in an ongoing consultation process.

During March, the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Coastal Advisory Group is holding nine stakeholder and public exhibition events, to show the work that has already been completed on issues and objectives and to consult on proposals for the future. (more…)

Hayling Islander: “Coastline could look very different in 50 years”

PARTS of our coastline could be allowed to flood in the future as the government struggles to fund sea defences along the Solent coastline.

A drive along the A27 in a few decades’ time might see a wildly different scene to the one we see today – with the tide covering parts of beauty spots such as Farlington Marshes, and Hayling Island being a smaller land mass.

It comes as a major consultation began last month on how the Solent coastline will be defended over the next 100 years. (more…)

Lowestoft Journal: “Vision for north Suffolk coastline”

A DETAILED vision of how the north Suffolk coastline might change over the next 100 years seems poised to be rubber-stamped at top level.

Protecting popular beaches and shoring up defences around Lowestoft harbour are among the proposals being put forward in the finalised shoreline management plan (SMP) for the coast from Lowestoft to Felixstowe.

The final version has been drawn up after three months of public consultations last autumn and looks likely to be approved by environ-ment secretary Hilary Benn and Environment Agency regional top brass in the spring.

The plan looks at the risks of sea erosion and flooding and considers where defences need to be strengthened or where erosion should be allowed to continue over the next century. (more…)

The Westmorland Gazette: “Row erupts over Ulverston coastal management plan”

ULVERSTON has been left out in the cold by planners who are trying to find ways of protecting the coastline in the north-west of England, according to its mayor.

Norman Bishop-Rowe was left fuming at the fact that the town was not included in a round of consultation meetings about the proposed Shoreline Management Plan, which he claims will have a major effect on Ulverston.

The plan has been put together by the North West and North Wales Coastal Group, a partnership made up of local authorities including South Lakeland District Council, Environment Agency and Natural England, and looks at how the coastline should be managed over the next 100 years. (more…)

Bournemouth Echo: “Cliffhanger ending for New Forest landowners?”

THEY face the prospect of their land being lost to the Solent.

Land owners in the New Forest were given their first chance to comment on plans that will end up shaping the future of Hampshire.

A major blue print, suggesting how coastal erosion should be tackled over the next 100 years, is going on display over the coming week at a series of public consultations.

Within the pages of the North Solent Shoreline Management Plan (SMP), experts have already recommended that some stretches of the county’s coast should effectively be sacrificed to Mother Nature. (more…)

NW Evening Mail: “Shoreline plan blasted by South Lakes councillors”

COUNCILLORS have criticised the plan that will determine how the shoreline will be managed in the long-term future, claiming it does not propose enough action against coastal flooding.

Doubts were expressed over the suitability of the Shoreline Management Plan when the draft copy was put to South Lakeland District Council’s overview and scrutiny committee when it met this week in Kendal.

The plan identifies the policies for managing coastal risks in the north west for up to 100 years from now.

But councillors on the committee told Tuesday’s meeting they were unhappy with the content of the plan, which is out to public consultation. (more…)

EDP: “Concern at threat to Norfolk coast”

One of north Norfolk’s major landowners has voiced “real concerns” about long-term plans aimed at managing the impact of climate change along its coastal borders.

Senior Environment Agency (EA) planners are finalising an updated shoreline management plan (SMP) for the 75km stretch of coast from Hunstanton to Kelling.

A four-month public consultation on the draft ideas was completed in November with feedback due to be taken into account before final plans are presented to councils for adoption in March.

But a response from the Holkham Estate raises concern about the impact on farmland and freshwater habitats and says the consultation should be extended to allow direct dialogue on any changes made. (more…)
