Yorkshire Post: “Cliff-top residents snub move to ‘council estate’”

AS their sea-view homes creep perilously towards a cliff-edge, residents at a private retirement estate say they have endured a “two-year hell” cloaked by uncertainty.

Now they have a whole new battle on their hands after dismissing land put forward for the relocation of 15 bungalows at Knipe Point near Scarborough as a “glorified council estate”.

In a final draft report which has been exclusively obtained by the Yorkshire Post, five parcels of land have been short-listed as preferred sites for the relocation of the homes which are deemed to be the most at risk. (more…)

EDP: “Happisburgh homeowners set to move on”

Homeowners in Happisburgh whose houses are perched on the cliff-top and at risk of falling into the sea because of coastal erosion have started the process of moving out and moving on.

In Happisburgh work has been taking place as part of North Norfolk District Council’s Coastal Pathfinder project with the striking of deal to compensate those whose homes are perched on the edge of Happisburgh’s crumbling cliff in Beach Road.

The council was awarded £3m in 2009 from the government’s pathfinder programme, which ends this autumn, to explore ways of helping coastal communities plan and adapt to coastal change.

And now the homeowners who have accepted deals, are starting to move out from the village. (more…)

EDP: “Happisburgh car park move planned”

An erosion-hit seaside village is set to get a new tourist car park, toilet block, and beach access ramp.

Yorkshire Post: “Residents fear for homes as clifftop crumbles”

RESIDENTS of a hamlet teetering on a cliff edge on the North Yorkshire coastline fear some homes will not survive the winter following a fresh series of landslips.
Three clifftop homes at Knipe Point, overlooking Cayton Bay, near Scarborough, have already been demolished after landslips. Residents at the site say about another four yards of land has fallen away during the recent cold snap, leaving their bungalows closer to the edge of a large drop into woodland below.

Around 15 homes, mainly owned by elderly people, are deemed at imminent risk and for some who have retired to Knipe Point, all of their money is tied up in their now worthless properties. (more…)

EDP: “Glimmer of hope in fight with Mother Nature”

In October 2009 two homes on a piece of land called the Retreat at Easton Bavents, near Southold were just six metres from the clifftop. But the site of the homes is now teetering on the edge of the destruction.

In just the space of four weeks a large part of the land belonging to the England family has crumbled away because of erosion caused by strong northerly winds.

Glancing at the latest photograph it could be easily concluded that the two homes, a chalet and mobile home, have fallen victim to erosion and plummeted off the cliff.

But in fact the homes off Easton Lane have been destroyed by human hands as part of a landmark agreement to help homeowners cope with losing their properties due to the long running and untlitmatley futile battle with Mother Nature. (more…)

Fears as Suffolk homes crumble into the sea

People living in a coastal village are “desperate” for help before their homes crumble into the sea and they lose any legal right to relocation.

Two homes in Easton Bavents, north of Southwold, are just 6m from the cliff edge and the owners fear they are in likely danger of succumbing to the sea.

Last year, £1.5m of state funding was allocated to Waveney District Council to explore the options available to communities at risk from erosion and potentially relocate them, as part of the Pathfinder scheme.

But a decision could be too late for the homes closest to the edge and those living in them want Waveney to support their quest to relocate now.

Paul England, whose son owns one of the homes on the edge of the cliff, said that if the properties were lost to the sea before a decision was made, the owners would lose their residential land use rights and no longer be eligible for relocation. (more…)

EDP: “Just how do you move the village hall?”

A coastal community gathered at the weekend to discuss how best to move its erosion-threatened village hall further inland.

The exhibition at Trimingham, near Cromer, on Saturday was the beginning of one of the first projects to be funded by a share of north Norfolk’s £3m “pathfinder” cash.

The money, part of a nationwide pot of £11m, was awarded to the district council late last year by the government to tackle the effects of coastal change. (more…)
