BBC: “Cliff home owners move building”

The owners of a cliff-top property threatened by coastal erosion in East Sussex have spent more than £80,000 moving their house inland.

Geoff and Ann Nash have moved back into the Boathouse in Birling Gap, East Dean, four months after the move began.

The front door of their 1900s-built house is now 72ft (22m) further back from the crumbling cliff. (more…)

Press & Journal: “Internet campaign aims to raise awareness of coastal erosion”

An internet campaign to raise awareness of erosion problems at an Angus beach was launched yesterday.

Campaign group SOS (Save Our Sands) Montrose is calling for those concerned about the erosion of the town’s beach to put pressure on local politicians to demand urgent action.

The group believes sand dredged from the local harbour and its navigation channel has had a devastating effect on the beach. (more…)

Canute Project

A film and radio programme highlighting the future of Norfolk and Suffolk’s threatened coastline has received its premiere. The programme made by a group of youngsters aged 13 to 19 was shown at The Cut arts venue in Halesworth on Friday .

With its apt title Canute, the film details the youngsters’ concerns over the loss of land and homes to the North Sea due to global climate change.

The group, under the tutelage of Suffolk-based theatre director James Holloway, recorded scenes at Easton Bavents, near Lowestoft.

BBC: “Disappearing coast presents dilemma”

It’s a bright sunny day in Studland, Dorset. The wind catches the sand and whips it through the dunes and grasses. Helped by the tides, as each grain moves the shoreline slowly but inevitably shifts.

Emma Wright has worked for the National Trust at Studland for the past seven years.

As we walked along the beach she explained she had become used to seeing areas of the beach swept away.

In November it took just one storm for the sea to reclaim 15 metres of the beach.

Emma showed me red and white hazard tape flapping next to some wooden posts – these were all that remained of the wooden steps once used to access the car park.

“It’s just the vegetation left which is holding the dune together and you can see it cracking all the way through.

“That will be just another chunk of dune grass to fall off into the sea with the next storm”, she says. (more…)

Felixstowe: New Beach Takes Shape

A huge pile of sand and shingle has been moved past Felixstowe pier over the last few nights as part of a £10 million Environment Agency project. The new beach material, which was stockpiled just south of the pier earlier, is being used to recharge the beach north of the pier, as far as the war memorial opposite the town hall.

EADT: “Coastal protest sends message to PM”

HUNDREDS of campaigners today formed a human chain along Southwold’s promenade to send a message to Gordon Brown about the Governent’s policy of abandoning the Suffolk coast to the ravages of the sea.

The Blyth Estuary protestors – who are angry about the Environment Agency’s plans to withdraw funding for flood defences at the Blyth Estuary – took their fight to Mr Brown, who is currently enjoying a summer holiday in the area.

The protesters linked arms and chanted “SOS” while some held banners saying: “Gord Help Us. Save Our Shoreline.” (more…)

Reuters: “Climate row engulfs Norfolk Broads”

Authorities consider flooding large parts of the Norfolk Broads, a hugely popular wildlife sanctuary in eastern England.

The move would be intended to address rising sea levels which many experts now believe pose an even greater risk because of global warming.

But the proposal has triggered a fierce local backlash amid fears village communities face devastation.

Message to Government from Happisburgh Singers

Fools, fools, Government fools,
How can we cope when the change all the rules.
To blame global warming not put up a fight,
Give up on old England, well, that can’t be right.
So our Broads one day we’ll be losing
And the sea will flood in at its will.
None of this is of our choosing
And the value of our homes becomes nil
While they plot our fate.

Rats, rats, all of them rats,
Leaving us stranded at drop of their hats.
Taxpayers money they never must waste,
But what of the victims evicted in haste?
No relief for poor landowners,
Cliffs will fall, land will flood, homes be lost.
Heritage that’s gone forever,
No-one’s counting the cost for us,
Nor cares a toss for us.

Shake, shake, shake in your shoes
Take on our Malcolm and you’re gonna lose.
The people are rising. They’ll never give in.
Our wrongs we want righting,
When things get exciting,
With Malcolm we’re fighting to win.

Recorded at Happisburgh Singers annual concert, 5 April 2008
